NILES -- Baseball can be a great magnifying glass, where the closer the score the more an imperfection comes into view.
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers committed three errors to give the Batavia Muckdogs three unearned runs and a 3-1 win at Cafaro Field before 2,842 fans Tuesday.
Errors costly
One error spoiled a scoreless game through three innings; the second mistake wrecked a 1-1 tie after six and the third paved the way for the undoing of the Scrappers, who had won eight of their last 11.
Three strikes and you're out, even if team is getting pretty good pitching.
"It looks like we made some mental mistakes out there and it cost us three runs," Scrappers manager Chris Bando said. "We haven't made them all year. It's one of those games and you rebound tomorrow."
Defensive flaws
He was just talking about the defensive flaws. The Scrappers were limited to 10 baserunners, three of whom were picked off base and two double plays erased another pair.
"There's no excuse for getting picked off," said Bando.
Ben Francisco singled and stole second to open the game for the Scrappers (8-7) but the Muckdogs retired the next seven hitters before Miguel Peguero singled with one out in the third.
He was picked off first and the next three Scrappers went down in order before David Wallace was hit by a pitch with two out in the fourth. He was picked off first.
The Muckdogs scored in the fourth on a double, a fly ball, and a fielder's choice where the throw to the plate went into the ground.
"You learn from your mistakes and we made a few tonight to learn from," said Bando.
Mahoning Valley tied it in the fifth when Jeff Haase singled, Sean Manfredonia walked and Matt Knox singled sharply to left to load the bases.
Angel Abreu grounded into a double play to score Haase, who finished 2-for-4.
Brian Slocumb (in his debut), Matt Blethen and Todd Culp held the Muckdogs (8-7) to just one run over six innings and Chris White came on to pitch the seventh.
Carlos Rodriguez singled and went to third when catcher David Wallace's throw could not be controlled on a steal attempt. A sacrifice fly brought him home for a 2-1 Muckdogs lead.
Chris Roberson led off the top of the ninth with a single and he stole second. Roberson scored when he stole third and Wallace threw poorly to that base.
The Scrappers threatened in the ninth when Hose Gomez and Brian Wright drew consecutive walks. Gomez was thrown out at third on a sacrifice bunt try and Wright was picked off second for the second out.
