KENT -- The Shannon Rodgers and Jerry Silverman School of Fashion Design and Merchandising at Kent State University will sponsor "Portfolio 2002: Saturation" shows Friday and Saturday. Works by creative design and merchandising students -- including senior Kate McKendry of Youngstown -- will be exhibited. A Fashion Hall of Fame Award will presented to Anna Sui, New York designer, at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by a reception and show at 8 p.m. The Saturday show will be at 6 p.m.
Genealogical seminar
CLEVELAND -- A genealogical seminar will be sponsored by New England Historic Genealogical Society and Western Reserve Historical Society Genealogical Committee on May 10-11 at Holiday Inn Select, City Centre Lakeshore. Admission for one day is $70 for members and $85 for nonmembers; for two days, $100 for members and $120 for nonmembers. Skate night planned
BOARDMAN -- A Celebrate TV-Turnoff Week event for families will be from 6 to 8 p.m. April 22 at Skate Connection, 7080 Tiffany Blvd. Admission will be free for this "Rock the House" event. Skate rental is $2 and in-line/speed is $3.
Fund-raising gala
NILES -- Amanda Beagle of Howland, the reigning Miss Summit County 2002, will be one of the featured artists performing at "The Best of Broadway" production Saturday at Mollica's Banquet Center, 123 N. Main St. A number of talented singers and dancers will participate in the event that will begin with a social gathering at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7 and the concert at 8:15. Donation is $25 and reservations can be made by calling (330) 856-5274. Beagle will compete in the Miss Ohio pageant in June.
Slovak folk concert
YOUNGSTOWN -- A concert of Slovak folk music will be presented by Raslavican, a group of 30 musicians/artisans, from Bardejov/Presov, Slovakia, at 7 p.m. April 23 at St. Nicholas Social Center, 3801 Shady Run Road. Slovak foods, paintings, ceramics and other artworks will be available when doors open at 5 p.m.
The event is sponsored by Youngstown Sister Cities and free tickets are available at Komara Jewelers, Catullo Meats, Leonard's Hair Salon, Darlane's Gifts, Globe Restaurant or by calling Bernie Demechko at (330) 782-8638.
Historical play set
ASHTABULA -- "Put Your Foot On the Rock," a play about black culture and history written by Daisy Baskerville, will be performed at 2 p.m. April 27 at Harbor-Topky Library, 1633 Walnut Blvd. Admission is free. For more information, call (440) 964-9645.
Kent choir to perform
SALEM -- Patriotic, spiritual and American songs will be performed by Kent Salem Community Choir at 3:30 p.m. next Sunday in Kent State University Salem Campus Lecture Hall A, 2491 state Route 45. Admission is free. Guest performers will include trumpeter Bill Schuller, percussionist Cory Welsh and members of the local chapter of Sweet Adelines.
