Bristol's King picked co-player of year



Sebring's Brian Clark shared honors as coach of the year.

COLUMBUS -- Bristol High senior, John King, who will be competing here tonight in the state basketball tournament, has been selected co-player of the year on the 2001-02 Division IV All-Ohio team, announced Wednesday by the Associated Press.
King shared the honor with Matt Witt of Tipp City Bethel. Witt is a 6-0 senior who averaged 34.7 points, 4.5 assists and 4.5 rebounds a game.
The 5-foot-11 King takes 17.2-point and 8.6-assist averages into a state semifinal tonight at 9 at Schottenstein Center against Delphos St. John's. He is also shooting 42 percent on 3-pointers.
Clark is cited: Brian Clark of Sebring shared coach of the year honors with Reedsville Eastern's Howie Caldwell, Windham's Marty Hill, Zanesville Rosecrans' Todd Rock and Centerburg's Jim Simpson.
Caldwell led his team to a successful season despite losing his house to a fire over the holidays; Hill's Windham squad went 18-2, while Clark guided Sebring to a 17-3 mark.
Rosecrans went 16-4 against a tough schedule under Rock, with Simpson taking his senior-laden team to a 19-1 record.
Others honored: Greg VanKirk of Sebring, a 6-foot junior who averaged 20 points a game, was a second-team pick.
Malachi Hall of Mineral Ridge, a 5-10 senior who averaged 21.8 points per game, was a third-team selection.
Making the special mention list were Jared Mike of Wellsville, Craig Giesy of Bristol, Kevin Stonestreet of McDonald and Marc Burcham of Mathews.
Josh Dean of Sebring and Chris Anderson of Mineral Ridge were honorable mentions.
First team: Joining King and Witt on the first team are Centerburg's Zach Ross (6-2, sr., 28.3-point average); Serge Gentile of Shadyside (5-11, sr., 19); Patrick Phillips of Sandusky St. Mary's (6-3, sr., 20.5); Ironton St. Joseph's Bill Dressel (6-2, sr., 21); and Tori Davis of Elyria Open Door (6-4, jr., 23.4).
Whiteoak's Justin Michael is listed on the second team along with Russia's Dane Borchers. Brian Cooper of poll champion South Charleston Southeastern also was listed on the second team.
Delphos St. John's is represented on the third team by Nate Klaus.
