Award for sewing
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Melanie McCormick of Canfield won first place in the wearable art category at the national Singer Academy for sewing in Charlotte, N.C., this month. She made a white sundress and purse embroidered with flowers and butterflies of her own design, using solar-active thread for the embroidery that turns bright colors when exposed to sunlight. About 300 Singer Sewing Machine dealers from across the United States attended. McCormick's creation is on display at McCormick Vac-N-Sew, 7217 Market St., Boardman, where she teaches sewing to customers.
