JOHN KOVACH | Colleges Schubert and Bethany PAC punch
BETHANY, W. Va. -- When a basketball player has the versatility to score from anywhere on the court, and also gets a lot of rebounds, the points will come in bunches.
Such is the case for Keith Schubert, a 6-foot-4 junior forward for the Bethany College basketball team from Girard High, who scored 1,361 points in his three years with the Bison to rank No. 3 on the school's all-time list.
Schubert scored 519 of his points this season, an average of almost 20 points per game, to lead Bethany to a 17-9 record and its first Presidents' Athletic Conference championship and post-season tournament berth in 19 years.
He also averaged 6.4 rebounds and shot 43.2 percent (187-for-433) from the field, including 40 percent (40-for-100) from 3-point range; and 75.5 (105-for-139) at the foul line.
Best in PAC: Schubert was named the PAC Most Valuable Player.
He credits his scoring punch to "probably being so diverse, able to go down posting off and being able to shoot the 3, kind of doing what I want," he explains. "Basically, I'm able to score wherever I'm at."
And he gets his share of rebounds by "just boxing out and being strong. Just going to get the ball," he says.
Schubert has a good shot at breaking the school career scoring record next season. The No. 1 spot belongs to Rudy Yaksich (1954-58) with 1,890 points, while Kevin Kozup (1993-97) is No. 2 with 1,667.
"I'm within pretty good striking distance of the record," says Schubert. "If I can shoot close to 50 percent from the field, I stand a good chance of breaking it."
Blends with Majzun: Schubert said he combined effectively with teammate Mike Majzun, a 6-4 sophomore guard-forward from Struthers High, who ranks No. 2 in scoring on the team with a 15.6-point average. Majzun also is a sharpshooter (147-for-293 from the field) and averaged 3.3 rebounds.
"We usually run a motion offense when [Majzun] is in there. Basically, just screen [to] move and get open," said Schubert. "We have a few set plays, but basically it's just swing the ball in and screen for each other. We try to set each other up."
Schubert had one of his best games last Wednesday in Bethany's opener of the ECAC South Region Tournament, collecting 22 points, seven rebounds and two steals in a 99-83 loss to Frostburg State.
Before that game, his 19.9-point average ranked No. 3 in the PAC and No. 33 in NCAA Division III.
Injuries: Schubert blamed the setback in part to several injuries that weakened the team, one of them being Majzun's pulled groin muscle that he suffered the previous game. The injury limited Majzun to only about four minutes of play against Frostburg State.
Joining Schubert on the All-PAC First Team was teammate Nevada Smith, a junior who tied for No. 1 in the nation in 3-point goals per game (3.9), and also ranked among the top 10 in 3-point shooting accuracy (101-for-204, 49.5 percent).
Bethany's coach, Rob Clune, was named PAC Coach of the Year after reversing the Bison's PAC record from 1-7 last year to 7-1 this season.
Schubert, the son of Debbie and Frank Schubert, is majoring in history and has a 2.8 grade-point average. His coach at Girard High was Mike DelBene.
More area picks: Two other Youngstown-area players, both from Thiel College -- A.H. Davis of Boardman High and Erik Hemsing of Kennedy Christian High and Sharpsville -- also made the All-PAC first team.
Davis averaged 16.7 points and had 30 blocks -- both Thiel bests; and averaged 4.6 rebounds while shooting 55.4 percent from the field on 155-for-280.
Hemsing, who was last year's PAC MVP, led the Tomcats this year in assists with 57 and averaged 11.7 points and 2.5 rebounds.
Rounding out the first team was Rob Strcula, a junior from Waynesburg, who ranked No. 2 in PAC scoring at 20.4 and No. 32 in the nation.
Andy Vlajkovich, a sophomore guard for Grove City College from Canfield High, made the All-PAC second team. Vlajkovich averaged 9.3 points and 4.1 rebounds.
