Senior Beth Zeone poured in 31 points, including six clutch free throws in the final minute as No. 1 seeded Oakland held off Valparaiso.Zeone finished 12-of-14 from the charity stripe, 10-of 12 in the second half, while three other Grizzlies hit in double figures including Sarah Judd (12), Katie Wolfe (11) and Jamie Ahlgren (10).Valparaiso, which trailed by as much as 16 points and still trailed by 12 midway in the second half, cut the Oakland lead to four points 70-66, before Zeone cashed in from the charity stripe.Junior Marlous Nieuwveen, Valpo's 6-5 center, led the Crusaders with 25 points as Valpo bowed out the tournament at 7-22. Oakland improved to 19-9.
IUPUI 58, Southern Utah 53
Angie Watt and Tiffany Kyser combined for 40 points and led IUPUI to a mild upset of Southern Utah.The Jaguars, seeded No. 5 in the tournament, came back from a six point deficit in the final two minutes to knock off the No. 5 seeded Thunderbirds.With the score tied 53-53 with 1:09 remaining, Kyser sank two free throws to give IUPUI the lead and then Watt added three more down the stretch for the win.Watt finished with 22 points and Kyser 18 for the 11-17 Jaguars. Lindsay Hille scored 13 to lead Southern Utah, which bowed out at 16-12.
Chicago State 62, Western Illinois 55
Sixth-seeded Chicago State upset Western Illinois for its first ever win in tournament history. The Cougars had lost all three of their previous tournament games.Krisey Sanders tossed in 22 points to lead the Cougars, who trailed by as much as 23-11 in the first half before coming back to take a 28-27 lead at intermission.The Cougars improved to 10-18 on the year, while third-seeded Western Illinois, which was led by Tiffany Cornelius with 13 points, bows out the tournament with a 16-11 record.
