NORTH LIMA Standoff ends with arrest
The suspect was wanted by several departments on a variety of charges.
NORTH LIMA -- A suspect in two recent Boardman church burglaries and a check forgery was arrested Thursday by police from Boardman, Beaver and Springfield townships and the Mahoning County Violent Crimes Task Force after a two-hour standoff at the Budget Inn, 9955 Market St.
While checking area motels frequented by Daniel A. Mavroudis, 38, Boardman detectives found his car at the Budget Inn shortly before noon.
Mavroudis was also wanted on arrest warrants from police in Warren, on two counts each of forgery and receiving stolen property; Niles, on charges of receiving stolen property and forgery; and Liberty, on a probation violation from Girard Municipal Court on one of Liberty's previous charges.
After "exhaustive efforts" to persuade him to come out of the room voluntarily, police entered and arrested him at about 2 p.m. without incident, said Jeffrey L. Patterson, Boardman police chief.
Mavroudis, who has a long record dating back to at least 1987, was not injured during the arrest, but he complained of breathing difficulty and was taken to a hospital to be checked.
A woman who was with Mavroudis when he was arrested wasn't charged.
Burglaries: Boardman United Methodist Church at 6809 Market St. reported Sunday afternoon that its office had been broken into and several file cabinets pried open.
Poland United Methodist Church at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road, which actually sits in Boardman, reported Monday morning that its office had also been broken into and ransacked.
About an hour after that, Sky Bank at 7235 South Ave. told Boardman police that a man, later identified as Mavroudis, had attempted to cash a forged check stolen from the church.
Earlier this week, police spotted Mavroudis' car going south on Southern Boulevard and briefly chased it, but called off the pursuit out of safety concerns for other traffic in the area, Patterson said.
