JOSEPH J. WASCHAK III, 79 President of postal association chapter



BOARDMAN -- Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home and at 9:30 a.m. in St. Dominic Church for Joseph J. Waschak III, 79, of 4626 Canterbury Lane, who died of a heart ailment Thursday morning in St. Elizabeth Health Center after a 10-year illness.
Mr. Waschak was born Nov. 27, 1921, in Youngstown, a son of Joseph and Mary Repko Waschak.
A 1940 graduate of South High School, he served in the Marine Corps during World War II and studied accounting at Youngstown State University from 1947 to 1952. He also attended the U.S. Postal Institute in Washington, D.C., the University of Oklahoma and University of Akron, and took management training courses at Brookpark Institute in Chicago.
He entered the postal service in 1947 and during his career held numerous positions, including clerk, foreman of mails, superintendent of mails and methods and standards analyst. He retired in 1982 as director of mail processing for the U.S. Post Office in Youngstown.
Mr. Waschak also taught management courses for the Postal Service in the tri-State area and received several awards for suggestions that improved mail processing. He facilitated the introduction of ZIP Code areas and express mail in the Youngstown area.
He was president of National Association of Postal Supervisors Chapter 133 and of National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 14. He also was a member of the church, Disabled American Veterans and American Legion.
Besides his wife, the former Rose-Aline Feast, whom he married Feb. 4, 1946, he leaves four sons, Joseph J. IV of Akron, Douglas A. of Lancaster, Calif., and James M. and Paul, both of Boardman; three brothers, John, Robert and Edward, all of Los Angeles; three sisters, Helen Scheid of Sister Bay, Wis., Kay Robinson of Poland and Dorothy Geidner of Youngstown; and six grandchildren.
