YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State women's basketball standout Alyson Vogrin was named to the All-Mid-Continent Conference first team Wednesday.
Vogrin, a senior forward from Boardman, was the only YSU player named to the squad, which was picked by the conference coaches.
The conference media and sports information directors also picked an all-league team, and Vogrin was named to the second unit on that squad.
Freshman Cathy Hanek, a former Ursuline High standout, was selected to the All-Newcomer team by both the coaches and the media.
Team leader: Vogrin leads the Penguins in scoring (13.7 points per game) and rebounding (8.4 per game) this year.
"It is a great individual award, but my goal for our team was to have a great season," said Vogrin. "Unfortunately we didn't accomplish our goals in the regular season, but now we have the [conference] tournament this weekend and that is what really counts."
Hanek averaged 6.2 points per game and finished the regular season with 51 assists and 25 steals.
"The most important thing is what we do this weekend in the tournament," Hanek said. "It has been a difficult year, and for me I don't think I really felt comfortable at this level until about midway in the season."
"Alyson has had the burden of trying to carry this team this season, and sometimes she just puts too much pressure on herself," said YSU coach Ed DiGregorio.
"Cathy has really come on to help this team, and if she continues to work will probably be one of the all-time greats here at YSU," he added.
Player of year: Oral Roberts junior Krista Ragan was named the conference player of the year. Ragan is in her fifth season because of two medical red-shirts.
YSU's Brianne Kenneally suffered a season-ending knee injury in the 12th game, which ended any hopes she had of winning a third straight player of the year award.
Joining Vogrin and Ragan on the first team was Sarah Judd of Oakland, Megan Woolston of Southern Utah and Katie Wolfe of Oakland.
On the media first team, Tiffany Kyser of IUPUI replaced Vogrin.
