Community pride program to begin

GIRARD -- A committee of city workers hopes to begin a community pride program early in July.
"We want to maintain the qualify of life we have, if not make it better," said Jerry Lambert, city safety director and leader of the panel, on Monday.
Other committee members are James Dobson, deputy health commissioner; Rex Funge, engineer/zoning inspector; Larry Kren, street commissioner; and Maria Orr, health clerk registrar.
Lambert said that he will be surveying the condition of street lighting, curbs and sidewalks, devil strips, signs, sewers and zoning throughout the city.
Lambert will also discuss problems and needs with residents and enlist committee members to help meet any needs.
"It's a large undertaking. I think it will be a good project," he said.
The service director explained that some days he might be able to spend only an hour in the neighborhoods, depending on his schedule, and more time on other days.
The committee was formed last week, Lambert said, noting that it's a consolidated effort to determine what residents need and whether the city can provide it.
"It's to point people in the right direction," he added.
