JOHN KOVACH | Colleges Narducci achieves academic honors at Ohio Northern

ADA -- Bill Narducci from Ursuline High and Campbell finished an outstanding baseball career at Ohio Northern University.
A four-year starter in the outfield, Narducci was selected to the Verizon Academic All-District IV second team in voting conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
He also was named to the Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference first team.
Narducci achieved a 3.7 grade-point average as a major in civil engineering, and has accepted a job with Lincoln Electric of Cleveland.
Among leaders: He also wound up as one of Ohio Northern's top career batters with 163 hits in 164 games, to tie for No. 5 on the school's all-time list for hits. He had a .299 career batting average.
This season, Narducci batted .255 with 29 runs scored and four homers, as the Polar Bears posted a 20-25 record under coach Herb Strayer.
Last year, Narducci hit .308 with 25 RBIs and 11 doubles, helping ONU to a 24-24 record.
Maynard leads CWR: Bonnie Maynard, a freshman on the Case Western Reserve softball team this year from LaBrae High, emerged as the leader of the Spartans' pitching staff.
Maynard enjoyed a 17-4 record and 2.07 earned run average with 73 strikeouts, and was named to the All-University Athletic Association first team.
Appearing in 24 of CWR's 41 games and pitching 138 innings, Maynard helped Case Western Reserve to the best record in school history at 31-10. The Spartans also gained their first berth to the NCAA Division III Central Region playoffs. Maynard is majoring in biochemistry.
Bacon wins third: Lucas Bacon, a junior on the Case Western Reserve track team this year from Rogers and Beaver Local High, won his third letter.
Bacon's highlight this season was a third-place finish in the high jump at the University Athletic Association Outdoor Championships in Chicago.
He is majoring in computer engineering.
Yanek to JCU: Stacy Yanek, a recent graduate of Salem High and a leader of the Quakers' girls basketball team, will attend John Carroll University and resume her basketball career.
A 5-foot-7 guard, Yanek led Salem in assists and was second in steals last season. She made the All-Metro Athletic Conference and Columbiana County All-Star teams. A three-year letterman, Yanek is the daughter of Janice and Tom Yanek.
Whitacre aids Storm: Marcie Whitacre, a graduate of Girard High, is hoping for another successful season with the Lake Erie College women's basketball team.
Whitacre started all 25 games at point guard last season for the Storm, and averaged 5.8 points, 3.0 assists, 2.1 rebounds and 2.4 steals. She also made 22 3-point goals and shot 70 percent from the foul line.
Whitacre turned in one of her top showings in the Medialle College's annual tournament in Buffalo. In two games there, she collected 23 points, seven assists, seven rebounds and six steals, and was selected to the all-tournament team.
The following week, she was selected as Lake Erie's student athlete of the week.
Whitacre is majoring in education and is planning to become a teacher and women's basketball coach.
Pair to Westminster: Football standouts Donny Waldron (Lakeview High) and Phillip Frye (Mineral Ridge) will play at Westminster College.
Waldron (6-1, 225), a middle linebacker and co-captain, was Lakeview's Defensive Most Valuable Player under coach Tom Pavlansky. He also made All-Ohio Special Mention and the All-Northeast Ohio Inland First Team.
For his career, Waldron came up with 249 tackles and nine quarterback sacks, three interceptions and one touchdown.
He also was selected to the All-Trumbull Athletic Conference and All-Trumbull County teams as a junior and senior.
Waldron is an honor roll student and the son of Stacy and Don Waldron of Cortland.
Star defender: Frye (6-4, 225), a defensive end and offensive guard and team captain under coach Jim Pappada, came up with 70 tackles, including 32 solo stops, his senior year. He also forced four fumbles, blocked two kicks and had one interception, fumble recovery and sack each.
For his performance, he was named as an all-state Special Mention, and made the All-NEO, All-Inter-County League and All-Trumbull County first teams. Frye also was a member of the National Honor Society, and is planning to major in engineering.
He is the son of Dianne and Zeph Frye of Mineral Ridge.
