NORTH JACKSON -- A man was killed when his eastbound car went off I-76 and down an embankment coming to rest in a creek 2,000 feet from the highway in Jackson Township. The single-car accident, reported at 8 p.m., occurred between Bailey Road and state Route 45, according to the Canfield post of the Ohio Highway State Patrol. The name of the driver is being withheld pending notification of his family. There were no other passengers in the car, police said.
Stacey Studio variance
AUSTINTOWN -- The township board of zoning appeals has approved a variance that will allow the construction of a new photography studio on South Turner Road.
The variance was requested by John Stacey, a Canfield resident who operates Stacey Studio in Canfield. Stacey is planning to move the studio from Canfield to 2851 S. Turner Road, near Kirk Road. The land on South Turner Road is zoned for single-family residences, a classification that would not allow for the studio's construction.
Butler cruise-in slated
BUTLER, Pa. -- The 2001 Cruise-A-Palooza, celebrating its sixth year, will be from 3 to 11 p.m. July 1 on Main Street. Johnny Angel and the Halos will perform at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. on the steps of Butler County Courthouse. Race car driver Bobby Martin will show off his Cap Avenger NHRA Federal Mogul Funny Car and sign autographs. A kickoff celebration will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Butler Memorial Park. There will be food and a disc jockey.
Sports media lecture
WARREN -- Dana Balash, sports anchorman for WFMJ-TV Channel 21 in Youngstown, will discuss the business of television sports at the Howland branch of the Warren-Trumbull Public Library at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The program is free.
Classes for test
GIRARD -- There are still openings for intervention classes for Girard students in grades nine through 12 for the state ninth-grade proficiency test. Classes begin Monday and run through July 13. The test will be given July 16. Anyone who has not registered but who wants to take the class should report to the high school at 8:15 a.m. Monday. Class size is limited to 25 students.
Conference for singles
WARREN -- Spencer Ministries is sponsoring "Broken Covenant Conference" for divorced or single people from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in The Hippodrome. The conference is designed to heal hurts and wounds through the Gospel.
Police seek foot licker
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- City police aren't quite licked, but they're befuddled enough to ask the public to help them solve a very odd case.
Police said Friday they are on the lookout for a foot licker who attacked a woman downtown about 11 a.m. Monday. The woman told police the man stepped on the back of her shoe and knocked it off, after which he grabbed her leg and began licking her foot and sniffing her shoe before she was able to run away.

MINERAL RIDGE -- The Weathersfield Township Responsible Citizens Association meeting is at 7 p.m. Thursday in Summit Assembly of God, 2615 Salt Springs Road. Speaking will be the Rev. Edward Noga of ACTION, a Youngstown faith-based organization seeking to improve the quality of life in the Valley.
