WASHINGTON -- A nationally distributed eye-makeup remover is being recalled because it may be contaminated with bacteria that can damage the eyes, the Food and Drug Administration has announced. The recall involves 16,300 bottles of Pierre Fabre Physicians Formula Eye Makeup Remover Lotion distributed between March 14 and May 28. The lotion is sold in 2-ounce bottles with 698 on the back and either batch number 0821 or 0601 on the bottom. It is made by Physicians Formula Cosmetics of Azusa, Calif. The makeup remover can be returned to the place of purchase for a refund. Those with questions can call (800) 227-0333. The FDA Web site is http://www.fda.gov/

Scientists may have an explanation for why the sun rises in the west on Venus. Venus, Uranus and Pluto are the only planets that rotate from east to west, opposite the direction that Earth does. To explain this mystery, astronomers have suggested that a giant rock might have smacked Venus, knocking it into a reverse spin. But in the current issue of Nature, two French researchers propose that an impact might not have been needed. Calculations show that, for a planet with a dense atmosphere that can slosh around, there are only four ways it can end up spinning. The most likely way, based on Venus' orbit, tilt and other factors, is the backward spin seen today, the scientists wrote.
