Sheriff's department hires new jail warden

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Sheriff's Department has hired a new jail warden -- 37-year-old Alki Santamas of Boardman, said Sheriff Randall A. Wellington.
Santamas, who began work today with an annual salary of $54,000, had been in the corrections division at the jail from May 1984 until February 1997, rising to the position of lieutenant and assistant warden.
He left to join the staff at the Federal Correction Institute in Elkton, first as senior corrections officer and then corrections treatment specialist.
Wellington said that his department, at the request of juvenile Judge F. Theresa Dellick, will now provide security within the corrections division of the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center, which had provided its own security in the area that houses inmates. Santamas is responsible for all expanded jail operations, the sheriff said.
The county jail and administration division of the sheriff's department had been under the command of Maj. James M. Lewandowski, who maintains administration duties and has the added responsibility of recruiting and training, the sheriff said.
