Held off voting on legislation banning the use of cell phones by motorists in a moving car in the city. Councilman Ron White, D-4th, said he doesn't think he has enough support approval, but he'll likely try at the June 27 meeting.Introduced a resolution to commit no less than $46,832 a year for a countywide transportation system coordinated by the city of Niles. So far, Niles, Liberty, Vienna Township and Trumbull County commissioners have contributed money based on the number of residents in each area. Other communities have expressed interest and state and federal dollars will be sought. Some council members say they're concerned the system will be a duplication of services because a few social service agencies in Warren provide similar transportation.Agreed to seek a $100,000 grant from the National Park Service to replace worn playground equipment and make other improvements at Packard Park. The city must contribute matching funds of $106,024, to come from Community Development Block Grants.Introduced legislation to apply for a $79,359 state grant to construct picnic shelters in Perkins Park. The city would kick in $26,453 from Community Development Block Grants.Authorized the city to apply for a $564,000 grant from the Economic Development Administration to extend a sewer line the city built in the Golden Triangle area of Howland.Officials say the project will supply sanitary sewer services to six businesses on Phoenix Road, helping to create and retain 200 jobs.Trumbull County initiated the project and will also seek a grant. The mayor will hold off signing the legislation until the city and county meet to hear concerns.Agreed to sell or exchange two parcels of city-owned property adjacent to its Water Pollution Control Center on South Main Street. Officials say a nearby resident owns land that divides the city's property. The city has said it will sell or swap the land with the private owner so he can set up a facility to sell Nature's Blend after hours and on weekends. Nature's Blend is organic fertilizer and potting soil made from sanitary sewer sludge on the South Main property.
