COLUMBIANA -- The Columbiana Public Library has kicked off its summer reading program, "Where in the World Are You Reading?" for kids in grades K-4.
Children will read books throughout the week and participate in activities at the library from 11 a.m. until noon Wednesdays through Aug. 1, said librarian Linda Kridler. Interested pupils may sign up anytime throughout the summer.
Activities include crafts, storytelling and a session on butterflies. Librarians from other Columbiana County libraries will present programs on dances from around the world, folk tales, bagpipes and African jungle stories. A party is planned on the last day of the reading program, and prizes, such as books and coupons for local food vendors, will be awarded.
"This year, the goal is 2,500 books read, and if that goal is met, the children's librarian will be put in a dunking booth," Kridler said. For every five books a child reads, he or she wins a chance to dunk the librarian at the end of the program Aug. 1.
Grown-ups: The library also offers summer reading programs for older patrons. "Read Anywhere" runs through Aug. 4. This is the fourth year for the young-adult program, aimed at pupils in grades five through 12, and the second year for the adult program.
Participants record their names and the titles of the books they've read on slips and place them into containers for prize drawings, which will take place after the program is finished.
The Young Adult Advisory Committee, composed of interested pupils in grades five through 12, will meet at the library at 3:30 p.m. June 18 to select the prizes. Possible prizes for young adults are coupons for food vendors, books, and gift certificates for bookstores.
Adults may win gift certificates for nine holes of golf, a dozen roses, oil changes, services at a beauty parlor and other prizes.
