Mahoning Ave. work
YOUNGSTOWN -- Work was to start today that will close one block of Mahoning Avenue between Oak Hill Avenue and Hogue Street downtown for about 90 days.
Drivers will be directed around the project using Marshall Street, Hogue and Oak Hill. Drivers should expect delays near the project and leave extra travel time during the morning and evening commutes, the city public works department said.
A new bridge to carry train traffic over Mahoning Avenue is being built.
Gun charge filed
CANFIELD -- A Warren man is to appear in Mahoning County Court at 6 p.m. Wednesday on charges of carrying a concealed weapon.
Canfield police said they saw a car driven by Atiim Smith, 27, of Garden Street following another vehicle too closely and stopped it about 1:40 a.m. Sunday on West Main Street. Police said they noticed the odor of marijuana, searched the vehicle and found a gun in a holster between the driver's seat and center console.
Smith was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, following too close and tinted windows.
Woman, son arrested
SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested a Spearman Avenue woman and one of her sons in connection with injuries suffered by the woman's younger son.
Police said the younger son, 13, apparently misbehaved May 27, and his mother, Mary Allah, 41, instructed her older son, Sharife Martino, 22, of the same address, to discipline the boy. The boy suffered a broken wrist while being disciplined, police said.
A school nurse noted the injury the next day and called Allah to tell her that her son needed medical treatment. Allah refused to provide that treatment, and Thursday, police arrested her and Martino.
Allah was arraigned Friday on charges of criminal solicitation and endangering the welfare of a child and freed on her own recognizance.
Martino, who was already in jail on drug charges, was also arraigned Friday on charges of aggravated and simple assault and ordered held in jail on $25,000 bond. He remained in jail today.
Police said Allah's younger son is staying in a temporary home.
