SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- People who have long wanted to pen an autobiography can find some help in a two-week summer workshop at Slippery Rock University. Autobiographical writing will be offered June 18 to June 28 and includes a field trip to New York's Ellis Island to research family roots. The course, offered for graduate or undergraduate credit and a on a noncredit basis, will include assignments that draw out the important stories of the writer's life. Library closing
BOARDMAN -- Boardman Library, 7680 Glenwood Ave., will be closed for repairs to the front walkway and front doors June 15-16. The branch is scheduled to reopen at 9 a.m. June 18.
SportsBrain knows
The road to fitness is paved with 10,000 steps.
Fitness experts agree that covering that distance each day is the key to cardiovascular health. But not all of the steps have to come from a formal exercise program.
One can accumulate quite a good percentage of those 10,000 steps in the course of a normal day -- by walking to work or at work, by taking the stairs instead of the elevator or by parking in a distant corner of the parking lot.
And it's easy to keep track of the steps.
The SportBrain, launched late last year, is an egg-shaped, battery-operated pedometer. What makes it special is its connection to the Internet.
As with any other pedometer, the SportBrain clips to a waistband or belt. With each step taken during a daily routine, a green light on the SportBrain blinks.
At the end of the day, users place SportBrain into a gray plastic cradle that connects to a standard phone line. The cradle automatically sends data to the SportBrain Web site -- http://www.sportbrain.com/.
Then, on a PC, users can log onto the site to get your daily report.
Google postings
The search site Google, which bought Deja.com's Usenet archive in February from its creators, has now restored the ability to post to newsgroups. Users can reply to any message less than a month old, but they have to register with Google first. (Earlier registrations with Deja's MyDeja posting service are not transferred over.)
A bite out of Cobb
SCRANTON, Pa. -- Ty Cobb's dentures will be on display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y., until late fall.
Karen Shemonsky of Clarks Summit, Pa., a baseball memorabilia collector, paid $8,000 for the dentures at an auction in 1999.
Shemonsky said the false teeth, which once were owned by Barry Halper, a well-known baseball memorabilia collector, are part of an exhibit of 150 items from Halper's collection.
"This is such a thrill," she said. "This was my dream. I always wanted to get them in Cooperstown."
