FARRELL, Pa. -- "I definitely want to work in marketing," said Ebony Savage, who will graduate from Farrell High School Tuesday.
Savage realized marketing would be the ideal profession for her while she and her mom were watching a television interview with the president of marketing for Victoria's Secret.
The executive for the lingerie retailer decides who's on the cover of the catalog and determines what should be in the catalog based on what people want, Savage said. "I like making decisions, and I think I could do that."
Although her mother had suggested she pursue forensics or psychology, Savage said, "My ideal job is something that's fun -- it's not even a job." With her mom's blessing, she will study for a bachelor of science in business.
Savage will be the first member of her family to pursue a college degree, and she hopes to make her mother and 21-year-old brother proud. She said she also wants to set a good example for her 2-year-old sister.
Determination: An honor roll student, Savage said she's wanted to go to college for as long as she can remember. A career and life management course, which requires students to explore various career paths, develop a r & eacute;sum & eacute;, complete college applications, plan finances, learn about budgeting and participate in extracurricular activities, including tours of various university campuses, helped solidify her decision.
Savage has narrowed her college choices to two: Robert Morris College in Moon Township, Pa., and Kent State University. "For my first year, I wanted to stay pretty close to home," she said.
Growing up in a single-parent home in a school district that has the largest percentage of children living in poverty in the state, Savage is keenly aware of what college costs. She's worked hard to keep her grades up in hopes of winning scholarships and plans to work this summer as well as on the campus of whatever university she attends. The financial aid packages offered by the universities will determine where she goes to school.
Savage is president of student council; vice president of the Spanish Club; a member of the National Honor Society, Junior Leadership Shenango, and Farrell High Show Choir; and a varsity cheerleader. She also is active in high school theater and is a member of the peer mediation board, a group of youths trained to mediate disputes.
