YOUTH ROUNDUP Canfield 'stars to play Clyde in state tourney
After winning two tournaments, the Canfield 9-10-year-old softball team eyes a state title.
CANFIELD -- The Canfield 9-10-year old fast-pitch softball all-stars won the Crestview Tournament and the Little League District 2 tournament this month.
The team advanced to the state softball tournament to meet Clyde in Boardman Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The Canfield team beat Crestview 17-2, lost to Boardman 5-4, beat Liberty 16-2 then beat Boardman 13-4 and 15-4 to win the Crestview event.
The Canfield squad defeated Boardman 4-1, Struthers 14-13, Poland 11-6 and Boardman 21-2 to win district title.
On the team are Emily Abraham, Bianca Biondillo, Kelly Fenning, Jillian Halfhill, Kaitlyn Griswold, Kelcie Herberger, Kellie Kollat, Kalie Luklan, Christina Porter, Kelly Sklenar, Becca Wagner and Alexis Wyatt.
The coaches are Rob Luklan, Mike Wagner and Tom Porter.
Finished second: ELYRIA -- The Canfield Little League softball team of 13-14-year olds finished second in the state after a 6-0 loss to Conneaut on Sunday.
Canfield came out of the loser's bracket to defeat Conneaut 5-2, but couldn't overcome it for a second time in the state title game.
Members of the Canfield team, the District 2 champion, were Ashley Bleggi, C.J. Calabrese, Julie Cooper, Dana Elias, Laura Hageman, Kerrie Haurin, Candace Madden, Nicole Mamula, Abby Tierney, Katie Williams, Franquie Yazbek, Elizabeth Zinni and Stephanie Zunic. Manager Larry Zunic was assisted by Mark Bleggi and Will Tierney.
Bill's Place: BOARDMAN -- The Boardman Bill's Place team won the Tri-T Pony League championship and placed nine players on the All-Star team. On the team were Joe Iacobucci, Ed DeLuca, Kevin Sikora, Matt Carhart, Dan Hammond, Jonathon Kocon, Jim Hlebak, Robby Fernback, Ryan Seydlorsky, Josh Moffie and Chris Peachalk.
The manager was Bob Iacobucci, assisted by Fred DeLuca and Gary Sikpra.
