Corruption of a minor
WARREN -- A 22-year-old Warren man has pleaded guilty to a charge of corruption of a minor. Charles Davies entered the plea before Judge W. Wyatt McKay in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. Sentencing is set for Aug. 8.
Prosecutors are recommending that Davies receive six months in prison. In exchange for his plea, they agreed to dismiss three charges of rape.
Police say Davies engaged in sexual conduct with a 15-year-old girl on July 24, 2000.
Safety days in Howland
HOWLAND -- The fire department will have bike rodeos, fire safety demonstrations and car child restraint seat inspections this month.
Safe Community Solutions days will be conducted at a block party at Woodhill Drive and Woodhill Court Friday, at the Ridge Road S.E. fire station Aug. 15, and at the Wilson Avenue N.E. fire station Aug. 21.
Firefighters will inspect children's bicycles, give out helmets, teach safe riding skills and show off the department's new fire education trailer.
K-9s garage sale
HUBBARD -- K-9s for Compassion will have a garage sale in Harding Park Friday from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The park is off state Route 616 on the edge of town.
The group provides animals to visit area nursing homes, hospitals and schools and to assist in therapy.
Although it does not take a lot of money to run the volunteer organization, funds are needed for some operations.

Traffic light removal
WARREN -- The Ohio Department of Transportation has proposed removing the traffic light on state Route 45, which controls traffic flow from the Copperweld Steel plant.
CSC, which was Trumbull County's fourth largest employer, filed for bankruptcy in January and laid off most of its 1,300 employees in April.
The traffic light will be set to flash for four weeks while ODOT studies the location.

Appointment announced
YOUNGSTOWN -- Wallace Dunne has been named interim superintendent of schools for the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown.
Dunne, a 36-year veteran of the diocesan schools, has been a teacher, assistant principal and principal. He is director of government programs for the diocese.
The appointment by Bishop Thomas J. Tobin follows Dr. Nicholas Wolsonovich's departure to become superintendent of Chicago diocese schools.
Lordi wants out
YOUNGSTOWN -- Former Mahoning County commissioner Frank Lordi has asked to be released from prison on shock probation.
Lordi, 55, of Canfield Township, went to prison June 1 to begin serving an 18-month sentence for theft in office.
The sentence was imposed in 1999, but Lordi was allowed to remain free while he appealed.
Visiting Judge Mark K. Wiest, who presided over Lordi's trial and sentencing, will rule on the request.
Boat stolen from Berlin
BERLIN -- A boat was stolen from Berlin Reservoir near Aspen Mill Creek campgrounds Sunday evening.
The Akron man who owns the boat told deputies he tied it to rocks about 7 p.m., returned at 11:30, and it was gone.
The Mahoning County Sheriff's Department said another boat was reported stolen about 11:30 p.m. Sunday. That boat was found floating near the U.S. Route 224 bridge.
Calls police, gets jail
AUSTINTOWN -- A 42-year-old North Redgate Lane man who called police about a stolen bicycle is in the Mahoning County jail on a probation violation.
George A. Ripple called police at 9:30 a.m. Saturday to report the theft of his green Huffy 18-speed mountain bike from his front yard.
During a routine background check, police said they discovered Ripple had a probation violation related to a DUI charge.
YSU research grant
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University has received a $120,580 grant for biochemical research from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
"The research involves specific types of enzymes," said Jeffrey Smiley, project director and a YSU associate professor of chemistry.
"Enzymes in general are the molecules within cells and organisms that make chemical reactions go faster."
