Woman dies in crash
CHAMPION -- A 20-year-old Champion woman died Sunday in a one-vehicle crash in Stark County. Troopers at the Massillon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said Andrea E. Calderone of Sunnyside Drive, a student at Mount Union College in Alliance, died after the Ford Ranger pickup truck she was riding in crashed on Dressler Road about 6 p.m. Sunday. The patrol identified the driver as Aaron K. Cooksey, 21, of North Canton. The patrol said the truck went off the road, flipped and struck a utility pole. Cooksey was in stable condition this morning at Mercy Medical Center in Canton.
Llama on the loose
HUBBARD -- The Trumbull County Animal Welfare League is trying to capture a llama on the loose. A motorist told Hubbard city police he was driving along Jacobs Road near Lincoln Avenue about 5:15 a.m. today when he nearly ran into a large llama standing in the middle of the road. The animal was last seen by police at Jacobs and Carson Avenue. Township Detective Mike Begeot said the llama is owned by Carl Brown of Bell Avenue, off Jacobs. Begeot said Brown has been ill and his llama gets loose "every once in a while."
Police identify victim
WARREN -- The 25-year-old man killed in a one-car crash about 1:40 a.m. Saturday in the 1100 block of North Road S.E. has been identified by police as Jeremy R. Roddy of 1514 Edgehill Ave. S.E. He was a passenger in the car being driven by Michael Denno, 23, no address given, who remained in critical condition this morning in St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. Police said the vehicle was speeding north when Denno lost control on a curve and struck a pole near Adrian Drive. The investigation continues.
Crazy Duck break-in
WARREN -- Police are investigating an break-in early today at the Crazy Duck, 121 Pine St. S.E. Intruders used a brick to break the glass in the front door around 4 a.m. to get in.
Man accused of assault
HOWLAND -- Tommy R. Reese, 21, of Athens Drive, was to appear in Warren Municipal Court today on a charge of felonious assault. Police said that around 2:10 a.m. Sunday, Reese and a family member began arguing and Reese started stabbing the relative. Police said the relative ran outside and as Reese chased him, passer-by Thomas Duley, also of Athens, stopped his car and tried to intervene. Reese began stabbing Duley, police said. Duley was able to get away and call police. No serious injuries were reported.
Temporary closing
AUSTINTOWN -- Howard Avenue between Norquest Boulevard and Mahoning Avenue will be closed Tuesday through Friday so two culverts can be replaced.
Traffic will be detoured on Norquest, Ohltown Road, state Route 46 and Mahoning Avenue.
Juveniles charged
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police have charged two Lee Avenue juveniles with burglarizing a neighbor's residence and setting an upstairs bedroom on fire.
The boys, 12 and 13, broke into 512 Lee Ave. around 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Women struck by car
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two women remained hospitalized today after being struck by a car about 1:45 a.m. Sunday as they walked across Glenwood Avenue near Cleveland Street on the South Side. Tiffany Patterson, 29, of Woodford Avenue, was in stable condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center. Jonelle Austin, 31, of Kenmore Avenue, was in the intensive care unit in Cleveland Metrohealth Medical Center. Police said the impact sent Austin through the windshield and onto the lap of the driver, Daniel J. Harris, 22, of West Judson Avenue. The investigation continues.
Mother faces charges
WAMPUM, Pa. -- A 21-year-old woman is accused of leaving her 5-month-old son in her car while she spent nearly three hours in a Beaver Avenue bar Saturday night until near midnight. Pennsylvania State Police said Ashleigh Wardman, 21, faces charges of endangering the welfare of a child. She was in the Lawrence County Jail this morning and the infant is in the custody of Lawrence County Children and Youth Services.
