NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE Scrappers lose 3-2 to N.J., split series

Mahoning Valley moves on to Hudson Valley for a game tonight.
AUGUSTA, N.J. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers, looking to bounce back from a 3-2 loss Sunday against the New Jersey Cardinals, begin a three-game series tonight against the Hudson Valley Renegades at Dutchess Stadium.
Mahoning Valley (11-28) split its four-game series against the Cardinals.
Scrappers starting pitcher Nick Moran (2-1) took the loss Sunday, after New Jersey scored the deciding run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Jesse Roman. Moran pitched five innings, allowing the three runs on five hits, with two walks and six strikeouts.
Take lead: Mike Edwards' RBI single in the first inning and Miguel Quintana's RBI double over the left fielder's head in the third inning, gave the Scrappers a 2-0 lead.
But the Cardinals tied the score in the bottom half of the inning, on Santos De Los Santos' RBI single and Billy Schmitt's sacrifice fly.
A day after the Scrappers recorded 15 hits in their second straight victory over New Jersey (19-21), they were limited to seven hits by four Cardinals pitchers.
Josh Merrigan (1-2), who relieved starter Rhett Parrott in the fourth inning, surrendered one hit and earned the victory, while relievers Mike Wodnicki and Jared Blasdell held the Scrappers hitless over the final three innings.
Mark Turnbow and Ron Colvard relieved Moran effectively in the final three innings, limiting the Cardinals to no runs and two hits.
The Scrappers return to Cafaro Field on Thursday to begin a four-game home-stand with two games each against the Auburn Doubledays and Batavia Muckdogs.
