Llama on the loose
HUBBARD -- The Trumbull County Animal Welfare League is trying to capture a llama on the loose.
A motorist told Hubbard city police he was driving along Jacobs Road near Lincoln Avenue about 5:15 a.m. today when he nearly ran into a large llama standing in the middle of the road.
The animal was last seen by police at Jacobs and Carson Avenue.
Township Detective Mike Begeot said the llama is owned by Carl Brown of Bell Avenue, off Jacobs.
Begeot said Brown has been ill and his llama gets loose "every once in a while."
Women struck by car
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two women remained hospitalized today after being struck by a car about 1:45 a.m. Sunday as they walked across Glenwood Avenue near Cleveland Street on the South Side.
Tiffany Patterson, 29, of Woodford Avenue, was in stable condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center. Jonelle Austin, 31, of Kenmore Avenue, was in the intensive care unit in Cleveland Metrohealth Medical Center.
Police said the impact sent Austin through the windshield and onto the lap of the driver, Daniel J. Harris, 22, of West Judson Avenue.
The investigation continues.
Juveniles charged
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police have charged two Lee Avenue juveniles with burglarizing a neighbor's residence and setting an upstairs bedroom on fire. The boys, 12 and 13, broke into 512 Lee Ave. around 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Temporary closing
AUSTINTOWN -- Howard Avenue between Norquest Boulevard and Mahoning Avenue will be closed Tuesday through Friday. Two culverts are being replaced.
Traffic will be detoured through Norquest, Ohltown Road, state Route 46 and Mahoning Avenue.
Westlake shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- William McDowell Jr., 43, of Otis Street was in stable condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center, recovering from a gunshot wound to his buttocks.
He refused to give police information about the shooting, which happened outside an Otis Street apartment around 12:05 a.m. Sunday.
A woman who witnessed the shooting told police that McDowell and a 19-year-old man had argued.
Police found three spent 9mm rounds in front of an apartment at 1119 Otis in the Westlake housing complex on the North Side.
Man with bat
BOARDMAN -- A 28-year-old township man was taken to the psychiatric unit at Northside Hospital after police found him destroying a car in his driveway with a baseball bat Sunday night.
Three officers, one with a police dog, went to the 5000 block of Friendship Drive and found the man hitting the car.
The man turned on officers with the bat, reports say.
Woman hit with bottle
AUSTINTOWN -- A 30-year-old Youngstown woman spent two days in St. Elizabeth Health Center after a woman hit her in the head with a bottle of vodka during an argument at Three's Company, a South Meridian Road bar, police said.
Police said the Youngstown woman, of North Brockway Avenue, got into the argument with her female friend, 24, of Indiana Avenue, McDonald, at 2:15 a.m. Saturday.
The Youngstown woman had to have 22 stitches in her forehead and plans to file charges against the McDonald woman, police said.
Principal to retire and start new job
ALLIANCE -- Michael Bosick, associate principal at West Branch High School, will retire July 31 and then become principal of State Street Middle School here.
The Alliance school board voted unanimously to sign Bosick to a three-year contract during a recent meeting.
Bosick, who has been an administrator at West Branch for the past 11 years, had previously served for 10 years as an administrator in Alliance, where he lives.
State law allows public employees to retire, start drawing their pensions and then return to the state payroll.
