LISBON -- An investigator probing the case of a missing Middleton Township woman says he's frustrated but not stumped regarding progress in the matter.
"We're still following leads," Detective Allan Young of the Columbiana County Sheriff's Department said this morning.
"We have several other places we want to look," Young added, referring without elaborating to additional locations that could be searched for the whereabouts of Tracy Hill, 24. She was last seen June 7.
Lake probe: Authorities on Saturday concluded four days of fruitlessly searching Guilford Lake for Hill's body.
An intensive search of the 400-acre lake began Wednesday. The effort began promisingly when dogs trained to smell a corpse underwater detected a scent Wednesday evening.
Divers spent several days trying to find the scent's source but were unsuccessful.
"I'm not giving up that there's a body in there. We just can't find it," Young said.
He didn't indicate whether another effort to search the lake would be mounted.
"We've tried anything and everything" to locate the body, Young added.
On Saturday, the search included use of dive teams and sophisticated sonar to probe the lake. Authorities also tried dragging parts of the lake, hoping to latch onto a body.
Volunteer firefighters from several area departments as well as about 50 public and privately owned boats participated in the effort.
Suspicion: Authorities focused on Guilford Lake, part of a state park by the same name, because Hill's estranged husband, Clifford, 32, was living in that area when she disappeared.
He also was found June 18 at the lake in possession of a car used by Mrs. Hill, authorities said.
The car belonged to her mother Linda Zoanne Evans of Holmesville, who told authorities Clifford did not have her permission to use it.
Hill was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and is being held in the county jail.
Sheriff Dave Smith said that Hill attempted suicide about a week ago by hanging himself in his jail cell.
Other inmates saved him. It's unclear why Hill tried to take his life, Smith said.
Hill has not been named a suspect in his wife's disappearance.
