Treating delinquency
A panel of juvenile officials identified the following risk factors as having the most profound impact on youth and families in Mahoning County:
Extreme economic depression.
Lack of parental involvement.
Early and persistent antisocial behavior.
Alienation and rebelliousness.
The county's strategic plan for youth and families is aimed at providing the following for youths:
Opportunities to contribute to their families, schools, peers and communities, which will help them feel responsible and significant.
Skills to take advantage of those opportunities because without skills, children are likely to experience frustration and failure.
Recognition for their efforts, which motivates them to contribute and reinforces their performance.
