Woman dies in crash
LIBERTY -- An Austintown woman was killed Thursday afternoon when she struck a vehicle that was painting lines on the road.
Beth Beligni, 43, of Hamman Drive, was driving south on state Route 11 near Tibbetts-Wick Road about 1:40 p.m. when she hit the truck and was killed, said a spokesman from the Warren post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Tractor ignites blaze
NEWTON FALLS -- An overheated lawn tractor engine ignited hay and sawdust, sparking a fire that destroyed the pole barn where it was parked.
Flames had spread throughout the barn at 3810 Carson-Salt Springs Road by the time Newton Falls volunteer firefighters arrived around 2 p.m. Thursday, officials said. A dollar loss estimate for the barn and its contents, including tools and a four-wheel-drive vehicle, was not available. Charles Tyree owns the barn.
Summer intervention
NILES -- The school district is enrolling second-, third-, fourth- and sixth-grade public and parochial students in the summer intervention program Aug. 6 through Aug. 17 at Jackson Elementary School.
The sessions run from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. Free breakfast will be served from 8:35 to 9 a.m. daily. Bus transportation will be provided.
Registration is from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Niles administrative offices, 100 West St. Questions regarding the program should be directed to Renee D. Ruman at (330) 652-2509.
Teachers participating in the program have received specialized training. Cheryl Raschilla will serve as the summer intervention principal.
Cafe 83 appeals
WARREN -- Cafe 83 is appealing a decision by the Howland Township Board of Zoning Appeals last month to forbid adult dancing at the 1522 North River Road establishment.
Atty. Jim Saker, township solicitor, declined to comment on the case before discussing it with trustees.
The case has been assigned to Judge W. Wyatt McKay of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
Attempted break-in
WARREN -- A 51-year-old Olive Street N.E. woman told police someone tried to get into her home early today.
The woman said someone broke the glass in her front door around 5 a.m. and she heard a man yelling to let him inside the house, reports said. The woman called police and the man fled, police said.
Shooter sentenced
YOUNGSTOWN -- Herbert Shelton has been sentenced in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to four years in prison for firing gunshots outside Choffin Career Center last spring.
Shelton, 20, of Alameda Avenue, pleaded guilty to felonious assault and a firearm specification. Judge James C. Evans gave him credit for 491 days he's served in the county jail awaiting trial.
As part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, Shelton is to testify against 22-year-old Leopoldo Prieto of Lansdowne Boulevard, who is scheduled for trial Sept. 19 on charges of complicity to felonious assault and taking a firearm into a school safety zone.
Police said Shelton, Prieto and a Choffin student got into an argument outside The Rayen School in March 2000. When the student left Rayen for Choffin, Prieto and Shelton followed him. A fight broke out and shots were fired. No one was struck by the bullets.
Man charged in rape
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A 21-year-old New Springfield, Ohio, man was in Lawrence County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond, pending extradition to North Carolina on a statutory rape charge, after State Police arrested him Thursday afternoon at his workplace along Wilmington Road, Neshannock Township.
Jonathan Ray Tamayo of Woodworth Road was wanted by North Carolina authorities on felony warrants charging him with statutory rape and contributing to the delinquency of a minor dating back to 1998.
