Man charged after chase that injured 3, police say

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A man who city police say led them on a high-speed chase, injuring a woman and two young children who were passengers in his truck, was in Lawrence County jail this morning facing numerous charges.
Police said Shawn Sanders, 21, of Maryland Avenue, was stopped by police just after midnight Tuesday on East Division Avenue and warned to turn on his headlights. Police said they started following Sanders after he pulled away and did not put on his truck's headlights.
Police said they were chasing Sanders when he lost control of the truck. It hit a road sign and a utility pole before flipping onto the driver's side and skidding about 71 feet.
Police said Sanders and his passengers, Lashawnda Justice, 22, of New Wilmington and her two children, Christopher Kooser, 2, and Devon Kooser, 1, were trapped in the 1991 Nissan truck. Firefighters had to cut the roof off to free them. The three passengers were treated at St. Francis Hospital.
Sanders faces charges of aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, five counts of disregarding traffic signals, three counts each of illegal turning and not using turning signals and one count of driving without his headlights on.
He was jailed with bond set at $15,000.
