City council handled matters including these at Wednesday's meeting:
U Authorized the city to advertise for bids and enter into a contract for the purchase and installation of a 40-ton chiller/air conditioner unit for the central fire station. The unit in place for the last 31 years no longer works. A new system is expected to cost about $65,000.
U Decided to meet in special session in August, when it normally recesses, to vote on an appropriation ordinance that is expected to include a proposed line item to fund Packard Music Hall for the second half of this year. A date has not been set. Council agreed to the funding if Packard officials came up with a financial and marketing plan, which they did.
U Passed a resolution honoring Robert L. Davis Sr., a major with Trumbull County Sheriff's Department, for his contributions to the community. He served as the department's head of the juvenile division and turn commander of the uniform division from 1985 to 1999. The 1958 Warren Harding High School graduate served as a youth counselor for Mahoning Valley Vocational School from 1963 to 1969; and a counselor for Cuyahoga Boys School, the Ohio Youth Commission and Rebecca Williams Community Center in the 1970s. He has conducted seminars in Trumbull County schools on self-defense, child abuse and drug abuse.
U Introduced legislation requiring owners of rental properties to have proof of insurance for fire damage when they apply for unit occupancy permits. Mayor Hank Angelo said the legislation is a great idea and suggested council require that rental property owners agree in writing to maintain insurance coverage.
U Held off voting on legislation changing the income tax department. One proposal is to establish the full-time position of tax administrator, setting the salary of $4,162 per month beginning Jan. 1. Another ordinance aims to put the position under the authority of the city's treasurer, which will be a part-time post as of January, handling city investments. Council is also considering qualifications and duties for the tax administrator. Legislators will continue discussing the matter.
