TRUMBULL COUNTY Man gets 23 years for sex crimes

The maximum sentence the man could have received was 25 years.

WARREN -- A judge sentenced a 47-year-old Newton Falls man convicted of numerous sex charges involving children to 23 years in prison Wednesday.
The offender, Charles D. Trader, did not comment during the brief hearing in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
Judge W. Wyatt McKay also ordered that Trader be labeled a sexual offender. As such, upon his release from prison, Trader will have to register with the sheriff's department in the county in which he lives.
The maximum Trader could have been sentenced to was 25 years, said his attorney, Anthony Consoldane of the Ohio Public Defender's Commission.
Pleaded to charges: Trader pleaded guilty in May to 15 charges of gross sexual imposition, disseminating material harmful to a minor and pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor.
In exchange for his guilty plea, officials agreed to dismiss six counts of rape.
Thomas Wrenn, an assistant Trumbull County prosecutor, said Trader showed pornographic movies to children and forced some to perform sex acts while others watched.
The victims were four girls and one boy ranging in age from 2 to 16. Wrenn said the offenses occurred during the last six months of 1999.
None of the victims chose to give a statement to the judge before sentencing.
Prosecutors noted that Trader was secretly indicted by a grand jury in October, but they had to wait until he was released from prison in January.
Previous charges: Trader served eight months after being convicted of breaking and entering in an unrelated case.
Court records show that he also served 18 months in 1986 for auto theft and receiving stolen property.
