YOUNGSTOWN -- Singer Michael Bolton will be featured at the reopening concert for Edward W. Powers Auditorium, which is being renovated this summer. Bolton and Youngstown Symphony Orchestra will perform at 8:30 p.m. Sept. 18. He and his musical director will lead the local players in performing Bolton's Grammy-winning pop songs and favorite arias.Ticket sales should begin next week at the Powers box office. "We're excited about this because he is a pretty big name for Youngstown," said Patricia Syak, executive director of Youngstown Symphony Society.
Arts council to relocate
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown Area Arts Council will relocate next year from its longtime offices at 323 Wick Ave. to the new Adler Art Academy inside Youngstown Symphony Center. The arts group will share space with Youngstown State University's Students Motivated By the Arts (SMARTS) program. Renovations on the second and third floors of the symphony center should begin in September and be finished by January, arts council president David Vosburgh said. Adler Art Academy is being funded by the Abe and Leona M. Adler Charitable Trust and City of Youngstown Community Development Block Grant program. The academy will offer studios for instruction of visual and performing arts as well as rehearsal space.
Music competition
NILES -- The Youngstown Feis Society will have its 36th annual Irish dancing and music competition from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Eastwood Expo Center. The event will feature 750 participants including local students from the Burke School of Irish Dance in Youngstown as well as competitors from the United States and Canada. Participants in 101 different events will compete on six stages. Refreshments and vendors will be available, and spectators may bring chairs. Admission is $6 for adults, and children under 12 are admitted free.
h Guitars on displayat rock hall of fame
CLEVELAND -- Custom-made guitars from the collection of the late Jerry Garcia are on display at Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. The five guitars, which are on loan from Grateful Dead Productions, can be seen in the museum's ground-floor lobby for free.
