CANFIELD Council seeks input on adding sidewalks

The deadline for comments is Aug. 6.

CANFIELD -- City council is seeking input on sidewalks.
A proposal calls for 4-foot-wide concrete sidewalks along West Main Street, between Cardinal Drive and the Mill Creek MetroParks bike path; Herbert Road, between Coral Way and the bike path; North Broad Street, between Dartmouth Avenue and Sawmill Run Road; and the entire lengths of South Hillside Drive, Indian Lake Boulevard and Oak, Kirk and Fair streets.
City Manager Charles Tieche said that residents' comments could change the plan.
The deadline to submit comments is Aug. 6. Tieche said written comments can be dropped off at or mailed to the municipal building, 104 Lisbon Street.
Tieche said the plan would allow the city to connect sidewalks to newer subdivisions, such as King's Lake on Indian Lake Boulevard and Stonebridge on Herbert Road, and would give residents more access to the bike path.
"We have several new subdivisions," Tieche said. "You may have sidewalks in your neighborhood, but you can't get to another neighborhood [because of a lack of sidewalks]."
Tieche said council has been discussing sidewalk conditions the past several years.
The project would cost about $219,100, Tieche said, about $175,280 of that coming in a grant from the Federal Highway Administration. The rest would come from the city's general fund or capital improvement budget,
Tieche said the sidewalks could be constructed in four to six weeks this fall.
