Youngstown Express reaches Ohio finale



NEWARK -- The 14-year-old Youngstown Babe Ruth League All-Star baseball team qualified for the state championship game with a 3-1 semifinal victory over Springfield on Monday.
The team advanced to today's finale at 7 p.m.
Youngstown rolled to wins over Steubenville 21-2 on Sunday and Butler 16-0 on Monday.
Dom Modarelli led Youngstown past Springfield by going 3-for-4 at the plate, while Jon Grist and Grant Sever each went 2-for-3. Grist also stole two bases.
Tyler Stanley and Josh McKenney combined to pitch a six-hitter. McKenney pitched two innings of hitless relief.
Offensive onslaught: Sunday, Grist led the way with 3-for-5 and two RBIs. Mike Eliseo went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Brian Dougherty was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs to also star for Youngstown against Steubenville.
Modarelli contributed three hits while McKenney and Aaron Pollack collaborated to pitch the win. Dave Piersante added a double.
On Saturday, John Mang and Grist combined to shut out Butler, while Grant Sevek socked a homer and had three RBIs. Eliseo had two RBIs.
15-year-olds: Greg Rohan went 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs to lead Youngstown's 15-year-old team to an 18-8 win over Steubenville.
Luke Srock, Pat Elias, Adam Boris and Nate McCloud added two hits each for Youngstown.
Adam Zakowski, Jay Yorty and Craig Dobos teamed to secure the mound win.
13-year-olds: Saturday, Youngstown blanked Butler County 14-0 behind Mike Bartos pitched a no-hitter with eight strikeouts in a five-inning game as the 13-year-old Youngstown Babe Ruth team defeated Butler, 14-0, in the state tournament.
Marc Rossi slammed two triples to key Youngstown's 13-hit attack.
