NORTH LIMA -- Police said this morning that seven youths will likely be referred to a diversion program instead of charges being filed for a rock-throwing incident at 12:50 p.m. Saturday. Beaver Township Juvenile Officer Dan Valentine said today a driver told a tollbooth worker at Ohio turnpike entrance 16A that youths had thrown rocks at his vehicle. The driver did not report any damage or injuries. A tollbooth worker called Beaver Township police who caught the youths. A diversion program helps authorities intervene without giving youths a criminal record. The names of the seven don't have to be made public because they are juveniles.
Coins stolen from home
SALEM -- Coins taken from a residence on the 1400 block of Benton Road are valued at about $1,200, Perry Township Police said this morning. The theft from the home was reported this weekend. A report on the crime didn't indicate if the house was broken into.
Possible arson case
PULASKI, Pa. -- Arson is suspected in a blaze that destroyed a Heritage Hills Mobile Home Park trailer, according to Pennsylvania State Police. State Police Trooper Eric Weller said the fire started in the kitchen area at about 12:15 a.m. Sunday at 384 Maple Circle. Samples taken from the trailer are being tested to determine what was used started the fire, he said. State police say they don't know yet who owns the trailer. The renter, Candy Clark, was not home when the fire started. Weller said there were no injuries. Clark's trailer and its contents were destroyed and vinyl siding on a nearby trailer was damaged by the heat from the flames, he said.
Facing drug charges
FARRELL, Pa. -- A Sharon man charged with possession of crack cocaine with intent to deliver remained in Mercer County Jail today in lieu of $50,000 bond, while his companion remained free on $5,000 bond.
Southwest Mercer County Regional Police arrested Roshon Pinkins, 23, Stambaugh Avenue, and Emilio Craig, 29, of Lee Avenue, Sharon, around 8 p.m. Saturday.
Craig, who was released on $5,000 bond, was charged with possession of stolen property, carrying a firearm without a license, receiving stolen property and reckless endangerment.
Police said they stopped the vehicle the two men were traveling in along Union Street in Farrell after hearing gunshots in the area. They said Pinkins had 7.4 grams of crack cocaine and Craig had a 9 mm handgun, which had been reported stolen in Sharon.
The men were arraigned before District Justice James McMahon on Monday. A preliminary hearing for Pinkins has been set for 11:30 p.m. Aug. 1. A preliminary hearing for Craig has not been scheduled.
Discussing landfill
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- The public is invited to a meeting where county and municipal officials will meet to coordinate their opposition to a proposed landfill near McConnell's Mill State Park. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Wayne Township Fire Hall, state Route 65. The meeting is being organized by State Rep. Frank LaGrotta of Ellwood City, D-10th. The proposed industrial waste landfill would be on about 50 acres in Butler and Lawrence counties near the state park and Slippery Rock Creek, a water source for southern Lawrence County. Sechan Industries made a formal application to the state Department of Environmental Protection for the landfill earlier this month.
Man hangs son, himself
ALIQUIPPA, Pa. (AP) -- A 38-year-old man hanged his 5-year-old son and then himself in the basement of a Hopewell Township home, authorities said.
Police found Randy Palm and his son, Skylar, hanging Monday in the home, about 20 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, the Beaver County Coroner's Office said.
Police were sent to the house after the boy's grandparents, with whom he was spending the summer, called authorities because Palm didn't return the boy to them Sunday, according to police records.
Palm had picked up Skylar on Friday to stay with him over the weekend, police said.
