Marshals assist in search for fugitives

ELKTON -- Authorities continue their search today for two inmates who escaped from the federal prison here.
Scott Holencik, a prison spokesman, said the U.S. Marshal's Office and area law enforcement have teamed up.
Columbiana County Sheriff Dave Smith said deputies were involved in the initial search after Saturday's escape, cruising back roads.
Deputies have not been asked to participate since then, he said.
Method: Information released Monday by Elkton Federal Correctional Institution officials says Rafael Herrera and Juan Gonzalez-Valencia escaped from the prison's satellite low-security facility by using a ladder made from a gurney to climb over the fence.
The satellite facility houses about 800 prisoners. The separate main low-security lockup holds about 1,800.
FCI officials reported the inmates escaped about 7 p.m. Saturday.
Herrera, 53, of Chicago, is serving a 20-year sentence for conspiracy with intent to distribute cocaine, heroin and marijuana. His projected release date was Dec. 20, 2006.
He is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs about 160 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.
Gonzalez-Valencia, 30, of Fresno, Calif., was sentenced to 10 years and one month for conspiracy to manufacture and distribute and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. His projected release date was Nov. 26, 2007.
