Up from Burlington: The new face in the Scrappers' lineup is that of Brian Kirby, who arrived from Rookie-League Burlington. Kirby can catch and play the outfield. "He wasn't getting a lot of playing time [in Burlington], but [the Cleveland Indians] really like his bat," Scrappers manager Dave Turgeon said. "From what I've heard, he's a kid who works hard and just wants to play." Turgeon also likes Kirby's attitude. "I got to the park today at 10 [a.m.], and he was here at 10:15," he said. "This kid means business."
Consistent mindset: Scrappers pitchers gave their team a chance to win, but starter Victor Kleine said he doesn't worry about how much backing he gets from the offense. "You can't really rely on the runs being there or not being there," he said. "Your game plan has to be the same regardless of what the situation is."
League leader: Scrappers first baseman/designated hitter Rickie Morton went into Sunday's game tied for the New York-Penn League lead in home runs with seven. Morton had homered in consecutive games Friday and Saturday but singled once in four at-bats Sunday. He was tied with Brooklyn's Noel Devarez.
Band marches on: The Struthers High School marching band played the national anthem.
Drawing a crowd: The aura of a new stadium -- KeySpan Park -- is attracting the New York-Penn League's top attendance mark in Brooklyn. The Cyclones drew nearly 8,000 fans to their game Saturday night and stood at 121,916 through 16 games there. Mahoning Valley is second on the list at 71,486 fans through 13 games at Cafaro Field.
Home games: The Scrappers have three games remaining on their current home stand -- tonight against Hudson Valley and Tuesday and Wednesday against Oneonta. Scheduled starters are right-hander Nick Moran (2-0, 3.00 ERA) tonight against Hudson Valley and left-hander Marcos Mendoza (0-1, 4.50) Tuesday against Oneonta.
