Man reports thefts
SALEM -- Police reported this morning that a Jennings Avenue man told them someone stole more than $8,000 in guns and coins from his home. The man reported the thefts Saturday, saying they had occurred within the previous 48 hours.
Items taken included a handgun, rifle and shotgun. Also removed were collector coins having a total value of about $8,000. Officials said there was no indication that the home had been broken into.
Man arrested in forgery
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- A city man was in Mercer County jail this morning in the theft of items from his family and the forgery of five checks.
Police said that Timothy G. Hassan, 20, Sheridan Street, Hermitage, took the family vehicle, several guitars, tools and miscellaneous items July 19.
They said he forged his father's signature to five checks and then cashed those checks at an area grocery store.
Police charged Hassan with forgery, theft, theft from a motor vehicle and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He was arraigned before District Justice Henry Russo on Friday and taken to jail in lieu of $10,000 bond.
Burger King theft
YOUNGSTOWN -- A former Burger King employee who returned to work for his last paycheck left with an extra $105 police said he stole from an open cash register around 4:16 p.m. Sunday. Police said an employee working the West Midlothian Boulevard store's register tried to grab the money from the 22-year-old Youngstown man, who was fired last week.
The man fled but not before being caught on video, which is now in police custody.
7 caught at checkpoint
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County deputy sheriffs arrested seven people on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol during a DUI checkpoint Friday on Market Street near Judson Avenue. Police stopped 303 vehicles out of 903 that went through the checkpoint. They also issued 19 speeding citations, arrested one person on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon, two on felony warrants, two on a charge of carrying open containers and two on marijuana charges.
A stolen vehicle was also recovered, but police said the suspect got away.
Guns, ring stolen
MERCER, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police in Mercer County said this morning that three rifles, a muzzleloading shotgun, two wedding rings and a small amount of money were taken Saturday night from a home along Perry Highway in Fairview Township.

Fight starts standoff
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police said they arrived at the scene of an argument at 508 Parkcliff Ave. to see a 31-year-old Youngstown man strike another man in the head with a shotgun Sunday morning. The antagonist held James Robinson hostage, using him as a shield, and ordered officers to stay back, police said. Police arrested the man after a 11/2-hour standoff. Robinson was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Airport wants network
IMPERIAL, Pa. (AP) -- Officials at Pittsburgh International Airport plan to establish a wireless network available for all travelers.
The system, whose costs and timetable weren't discussed, could be accessed by passengers with any kind of wireless device, including laptop computers, handheld computers and cell phones with Internet capabilities.
