Black soldiers honored
At 10 a.m. Monday at Arlington National Cemetery, the Department of Defense will honor blacks who fought in the Korean War with a tree planting and plaque dedication ceremony that begins at the Tomb of the Unknowns. One of the former soldiers who will be recognized is retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Lionel West who earned a Bronze Star for his actions Sept. 2, 1950 in Haman, Korea, where he saved lives using a 105mm howitzer to fight enemy forces.
Web site finds vets
The Korean War Veterans Reunion, a group of veterans who search for fellow Korean vets primarily using the Internet, has found information on more than 11,000 service members. The reunion group was started in the early 1990s by Richard Gallmeyer of Virginia Beach, Va., who served in the Army's Headquarters Battery, 58th Field Artillery Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, in Korea. Post elects commander
YOUNGSTOWN -- VFW Post 8841 elected Anthony Volpini as its commander for the 2001-2002 year. Other officers are: Thomas Sikora, senior vice commander; Anthony Corroto, junior vice commander; Carl Pedaline, quartermaster; Joseph DeFiore, judge advocate; Angelo Nacarato, chaplain; Angelo Italiano, surgeon; Dominic Italiano, Cyril Barabas and John J. Free health screenings
The Mobile Outreach Team of the Veterans Affairs Butler Medical Center will provide free health screenings from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 7 at VFW Post 315 in New Castle. Veterans should bring their discharge papers.

Captain takes command
Army Capt. George L. Hammar IV took command of Battery B, 3rd Battalion, 3121st Field Artillery Regiment, Fort Bragg, N.C. Hammar, a veteran of Desert Storm, graduated in 1989 from Youngstown Chaney High School and in 1995 from Youngstown State University. His is a son of George and Lydia Hammar, 2213 Burma Drive, and is married to the former Joy Hawley, formerly of Dodge City, Kan.

Sergeant decorated
Army Staff Sgt. Robert W. Rogers Jr. (Union High School, New Castle '90) has been decorated with the Army Commendation Medal while assigned as a mortar squad leader with Alpha Company. 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry at Fort Campbell, Ky. He is a son of Minnie M. Bosela, 6 Miller Ave., New Castle.

Sergeant arrives
Air Force Reserve Staff Sgt. Daniel C. McNair has arrived for duty at the 910th Airlift Wing in Vienna. McNair is a security journeyman assigned to the Security Forces Squadron. He is a son of Douglas C. and Cynthia A. McNair, 133 W. Main St., East Palestine, and a 1994 graduate of East Palestine High School.
