ST. BRENDAN'S Saunders honored with golf benefit
He's been a coach at the school for the last 25 years.
LAKE MILTON -- The first St. Brendan School Alumni and Friends golf tournament will be Aug. 5 at Lakeside Golf Course.
Proceeds will benefit the St. Brendan School Endowment Fund, which will create a means to secure the future of the school and continue its 75-year tradition.
Committee members have decided to dedicate this benefit to 1953 St. Brendan graduate John "Red" Saunders.
Saunders coached at St. Brendan School for 25 years and won numerous championships.
He coached hundreds of students, many of who went on to achieve success in high school, college and even the National Football League.
Saunders' grandparents were founding members of St. Brendan's parish. He and his wife, the former Barb Williams, were married at St. Brendan's church 24-years ago.
Coached standouts: Saunders began the careers of some great area athletes, including Jim O'Malley (Notre Dame/Denver Broncos), Michael Zordich (Penn State/ Philadelphia Eagles, Arizona Cardinals) and Jerry Olsavsky (University of Pittsburgh/Pittsburgh Steelers).
He also coached some of the premier high school coaches of the area, including Jim Vivo, Sean Durkin and Alan Mikovich.
Zordich and Olsavsky have agreed to serve as honorary co-chairmen.
In addition to helping secure golfers, sponsors and supporters, they will be on hand with their foursomes signing autographs and reminiscing about sports at St. Brendan's school.
To register for the outing, call Scott Schulick at (330) 792-5544 or Michael Kernan at (330) 757-8858.
Cost per golfer is $60 and includes 18 holes of golf with cart, breakfast, lunch and dinner along with refreshments and prizes. The format is a four-person scramble.
