MILITARY ACADEMY Graduates



Several area residents graduated from military academies and were commissioned officers in the military service.
Ryan W. Nicklin graduated from the Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He served as a cadet senior officer at the academy. Nicklin is a son of Darrell L. and Sue A. Nicklin, 489 Methodist Road, Greenville, Pa., and is a 1997 graduate of Greenville High School.
John J. Isacco graduated from the Air Force Academy and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He served as a cadet senior officer while at the academy. Isacco is a son of Michael D. and Ann W. Isacco, 78 Donation Road, Greenville, Pa., and is a 1997 graduate of Greenville High School.
Thomas J. Farina II graduated from the Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., and was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy. A son of Thomas and Robin Farina, 5762 Millcreek Blvd., Boardman, he has been assigned to the cruiser USS Gettysburg. He has been accepted in the nuclear engineering program during his third year of service, and during the final two years of a five-year obligation he will serve aboard an aircraft carrier. Farina is a 1997 graduate of Boardman High School.
Christine L. Fix graduated from the Naval Academy with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and was commissioned an ensign in the Navy. She will attend flight school in Pensacola, Fla. A daughter of Marvin and Carol Fix, 1275 E. Western Reserve Road, she graduated in 1994 from Springfield Local High School and has served in the Navy for seven years.
Daniel J. Fox graduated from the Naval Academy with a bachelor of science degree in ocean engineering and was commissioned an ensign in the Navy. He is a son of Sheila E. Webb, Uniontown, Ohio, and David N. Fox, 1154 Evergreen Road, Pulaski, Pa. and graduated in 1996 from Mohawk High School in Bessemer.
Andrea V. Kinsey graduated from the Naval Academy with a bachelor of science degree in political science and was commissioned an ensign in the Navy. She is a daughter of Darlene S. Kinsey, 7 Highland Colony, East Liverpool, and Theodore G. Kinsey, 312 Blakely St., East Liverpool, and graduated in 1997 from East Liverpool High School.
Seth Adam Kretser graduated from the Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., with a bachelor's degree in general management. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and will attend the officer basic course at Fort Sill, Okla. He is a son of Gregory and Brenda Kretser, Orangeville, and graduated in 1997 from Joseph Badger High School in Kinsman.
Erik T.R. Munnell graduated from the Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y., with a bachelor of science degree in marine transportation. He was commissioned an ensign in the Navy Reserve and received a deck officer's merchant marine license. He plans to attend graduate school and study admiralty law. While at the academy, Munnell played in the regimental band and played varsity football. He is a son of Jeanne and Tom Munnell, 3793 Tyler Drive, Canfield, and graduated in 1997 from Canfield High School.
Francis L. McCabe graduated with distinction from Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Va., with a bachelor of arts degree in international studies and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. While at VMI, he received the General Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr. '17, Sixth Marine Division Award, presented to the top marine graduate of the Navy ROTC program, and the Scottish-American Military Society Dirk Award, and was a member of the Semper Fi Society. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis McCabe, Youngstown, and graduated from Brookfield High School.
Matthew Semple of Girard, a son of Dr. and Mrs. Ed Semple, 1571 Oak St., Girard, was commissioned an ensign in the Navy at Norwich University, The Military College of Vermont, Northfield, Vt. During the commissioning Semple's mother and brother, Signalman First Class Hans Semple, USN placed his shoulder insignia on his uniform. The honor of the first salute was rendered by his father, Petty Officer First Class Ed Semple, USNR-Retired. Semple graduated from Norwich with a bachelor of arts degree in history, and was scheduled to attend Surface Warfare Officer School at the Naval Station, Newport, R.I. He has been assigned to the USS Stump (DD978), a Spruance Class destroyer, in Norfolk, Va. Semple graduated from Girard High School in 1997 and attended Norwich University on a Navy ROTC Scholarship.
