Events precede tournament
VIENNA -- The Giant Eagle LPGA Classic, which begins Monday at Squaw Creek Country Club, will have its fill of special events even before the LPGA players begin competition Friday.
The Trumbull Memorial Hospital Foundation Club will host its physically challenged and seniors golf clinic on Monday at 9 a.m. at the driving range. That will be followed by the Eddie DeBartolo Junior Golf Clinic at noon at the range.
Driving distance: Tuesday, the Schwebel's Long Drive competition gets underway at the club's driving range. At 1:45 p.m., six amateur local women golfers will compete for the title, and that will be followed by six tour professionals, including Michelle McGann, Sherri Turner, Tammie Durdin, Jennifer Rosales, Annette DeLuca and Jean Zedlitz.
The Butler Wick Corporation Celebrity Shootout will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday beginning on the No. 10 tee. This year's format will include five celebrities and 10 LPGA pros.
During the Vindicator Pro-Am on Monday and Cellular One Pro-Am Tournament Wednesday and Thursday, there will be two hole-in-one contests for the amateurs and also a long drive competition on the No. 13 hole.
On Saturday, the annual Gillette-Giant Eagle putting challenge will be held with Sandy DiFiore of Silver Lake trying to sink a 10-foot putt for $25,000.
