Farewell celebration
YOUNGSTOWN -- A farewell celebration for the Rev. Gary Frost and his wife, Lynette, will be at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 10 at McMenamy's in Niles.
The Rev. Mr. Frost, the former pastor of Rising Star Baptist Church in Youngstown, recently became vice president of strategic partnership in North America for the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation's largest Protestant denomination.
The cost is $20 a person. Tickets are available at Family Christian Store, Boardman; A New Beginning Book Store, Warren; or Rising Star.
Lutherans earn award
BOARDMAN -- The Lutheran Brotherhood of Minneapolis has given its Youngstown Branch 8553 a superior rating for effectiveness. The rating, the brotherhood's highest, recognized the branch for community service projects in 2000.
Youngstown Branch 8553 coordinated volunteer service projects, played host to fund-raisers and distributed matching funds from the brotherhood for local projects.
The 2001 officers -- the same as last year -- are Bill Davis of Austintown, president; Dolores Snyder and Phil Snyder, both of Boardman, vice president and publicity, respectively; Jeannette Shorthouse of Boardman, secretary; Sandy Wentz of Austintown, treasurer; Jack Ritter and Norm Zembower, both of Boardman, service officers; Dorothy Fizet and Tom Fizet of Austintown, education officer and special projects, respectively; and Richard Zenn of Boardman, youth officer.
Missionary to speak
POLAND -- Missionary and author Mark Geppert will speak at Prince of Peace at 7 p.m. Monday.
Geppert is the author of "Every Place Your Foot Shall Tread," about the power of prayer. He'll explain his experiences in prayer walking. The missionary to Southeast Asia is based in Pittsburgh. For more information, call (330) 757-3272.

Prayer walk
YOUNGSTOWN -- The HOPE 2001 Crusade is sponsoring the Greater Youngstown prayer walk at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 4. The walk is an advance event for a crusade scheduled for October.
People may gather at churches on each side of Youngstown before walking to the center of the city for a prayer rally.
Churches coming from the north should gather at Tabernacle Baptist Church. Other gathering points are: from the south, John Knox Presbyterian Church; east, Mount Zion Baptist Church; west, Hungarian Presbyterian Church.
Those who do not want to walk may gather at the Federal Plaza East Amphitheater at 10:45 a.m. The rally will end at noon.
Gospel singing
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mickey Henry and New Direction of New Castle, Del., will perform at Heavenly Place Church of God in Christ at 7 p.m. July 28. Tickets are $7 in advance and $8 at the door. Call (330) 747-5816.
Fueling fire
VILLA MARIA, Pa. -- EverGreen will present "Elemental Fire: Coming to Know the Light Within" from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 11. Kathy Wentz, an educator and artist, will discuss fires that fuel lives: the fire of love, the fire of creativity, the fire of transformation and the fire of passion and purpose. Spiritual talk
YOUNGSTOWN -- Maureen Sweeny Kyle of Holy Love Ministries in Elyria will talk after the Mass at noon Aug. 11 at the Franciscan Shrine of Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted. Her talk is being presented by the secular Franciscan order Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Summer Fest 2001
STRUTHERS -- The Midlothian Ministerium Association is sponsoring Summer Fest 2001 from 3 to 9 p.m. July 29 at Yellow Creek Park. There will be games for children and a covered-dish dinner at 5 p.m. The association will provide hot dogs, hamburgers, beverages and ice cream. Campfire devotions are at 6 p.m.
Youth ministry
