Park programs look at rocks, wildlife

PORTERSVILLE, Pa. -- Programs about fossils, wildlife habitats and recycling are to begin this weekend at McConnell's Mill State Park along U.S. Route 422.
"Stories in Stone," a program about fossil formations, begins at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Kildoo picnic area. Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock formations and geology will be discussed. "Wild About Wildlife!" starts at 2 p.m. Sunday in the courtyard adjacent to the Old Mill. A naturalist will describe tracks, habitats and habits of area animals.
For children: Youth Environmental Learning Series programs will include "Put Trash in Its Place," a program for 4- and 5-year-olds, that begins at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Kildoo picnic area. Recycling is the topic.
"Just Bury It," an hourlong program for children 6 to 8, begins at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the ballfield across from the Kildoo picnic area. How to use nature for recycling purposes will be discussed.
"To Zone or Not to Zone" is from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Old Mill. The program will look at how human land use often conflicts with needs or wants of other humans and wildlife.
Children ages 9 to 13 will be able to participate in a mock land-use planning committee meeting with an emphasis on the importance of county commissioners in the zoning process.
