New principal chosen in Columbiana
COLUMBIANA -- Longtime Salem resident Fred Kunar will begin duties Aug. 1 as Columbiana High School principal.
Kunar replaces Dr. Joseph Shivers, who accepted a position as director of curriculum, instruction and personnel at Salem schools.
Salary information was not immediately available.
Superintendent Dr. Joseph Rottenborn said Columbiana teachers and staff members, community residents, parents and high school students were among those to interview 14 finalists for the post.
Rottenborn received 40 applications, including some from as far away as Arizona.
Rottenborn said Kunar comes to the district recommended as a person respected by staff members, parents and students alike.
"He is described as well-organized with a quiet, yet effective style of leadership," Rottenborn said.
A resident of Salem for 24 years, Kunar was assistant principal at Lakeview High School in Cortland for six years and assistant principal at Field High School in Mogadore for one year.
He also has been a teacher and coach at Salem and Ravenna high schools.
Kunar earned a bachelor's degree in secondary education and an Ohio principal's certificate at the University of Akron.
He and his wife, Edna, have three grown children.
