Mother faces charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 22-year-old mother has been charged with child endangering after her twin 2-year-old boys were found wandering alone in Pemberton Park clad only in dirty diapers about 9 a.m. Thursday.
A teen-ager who saw the twins come out of an Aberdeen Avenue home with a dog called police, who pounded on the back door of the house and yelled to rouse the boys' mother, who was asleep upstairs with her boyfriend.
Police described the house as being filthy with only a minimal amount of food. Mahoning County Children Services was seeking relatives to care for the children.
Shots injure brothers
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two brothers are in St. Elizabeth Health Center after being shot outside Smokey Joe's Lounge in the Uptown area of Market Street at 1 a.m. today.
Nakia L. Sharpe, 26, of Fairgreen Avenue was in critical condition this morning with several wounds.
A security guard at another South Side bar told police he saw a man in khaki shorts and a red flowered shirt open fire, then ran.
Derek S. Sharpe, 23, also of Fairgreen, was in stable condition with a gunshot wound.
Stable after shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- Delano E. Perel, 22, of St. Louis Avenue was in stable condition today at St. Elizabeth Health Center with bullet wounds to his right hand and forearm and left shoulder. He told police that his girlfriend, who though he was unfaithful, shot him about 11 p.m. Thursday. He signed a domestic violence complaint and police arrested the 26-year-old woman.
Historical Society
COITSVILLE -- Coitsville Historical Society will meet at 3 p.m. Sunday at Coitsville Presbyterian Church, state Route 616, to discuss the completion of a pavilion and plans for a children's park on Begala Road.
Legal services
YOUNGSTOWN -- The board overseeing the proposed downtown arena approved a resolution to pay its law firm $250 an hour. The board acted Thursday on the recommendation of its finance committee to pay the fee to Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & amp; Aronoff, a law firm with offices in Cleveland and Columbus. The one-year agreement does not have a cap on the firm's fees. The Benesch firm submitted the highest per-hour fee of the four companies seeking the legal counsel position.
Contract awarded
YOUNGSTOWN -- Canteen of Steel Valley Inc. of Youngstown has been awarded a contract to provide meals to prisoners at the Mahoning County jail. Commissioners approved the two-year contract Thursday that is to go into effect within 30 to 45 days. Previously, a Chicago company had provided the meals. The estimated annual cost of about $235,000 will vary depending on the number of prisoners.
Man's trial is delayed
YOUNGSTOWN -- The trial for Irrin Donley, who confessed in April that he killed his girlfriend's 9-month-old baby, has been delayed, and no new date has been set.
Donley, 23, of Magnolia Avenue, was watching the boy while the mother, Tisha Rozier, was at school. Authorities said the baby stopped breathing because Donley hit him. The baby was on life support for about four days before he died Oct. 19, 1998, in Forum Health Tod Children's Hospital.
Donley first pleaded guilty April 3 to involuntary manslaughter, but then asked to withdraw his plea and go to trial.
Doctor pleads innocent
WARREN -- An area pediatrician has pleaded innocent to two counts of sexual imposition. Detective John Delbene said Dr. Jitander Kalia, who lives in Cortland but has an office on Homewood Avenue Southeast in Warren, fondled two of his secretaries June 13. Trial is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Aug. 22 in Warren Municipal Court. The secretaries no longer work for Kalia, Delbene said.
Rains flood lots, homes
NILES -- Brief but hard rains that pounded parts of Trumbull County on Thursday evening caused alarms to sound at Eastwood Mall and flooding in parking lots and a few homes. Firefighters said the alarms were triggered by leaks in the building. The police department, which receives all city complaint calls after hours, got calls about basement and street flooding on John and Helen streets, Ridgelawn Drive and other areas. Officials at the Warren and Howland fire departments and Trumbull County 911 Center said they received no reports of flooding. Waters receded in most spots within a couple of hours of the downpour.
