The Pascoes of New Castle, Pa., turned in a stellar family performance last weekend at the West Virginia State Trap Shoot in Wellsburg, W.Va.
Frank, Belinda and Joe -- dad, mom and son -- all got a piece of the awards action at the Sportsmen & amp; Farmers Association of Brooke County trap shooting facility.
The crowning glory of the weekend was Joe Pascoe's completion of a grand slam. The youngest member of the shooting Pascoes gobbled up 100 birds at the 27-yard line in handicap shooting to complete the trio of events needed for a trap grand slam.
Other events: Joe got his other two grand slam events when he plugged 100 clays in doubles earlier this year at the Pennsylvania State Shoot and 200 from 16-yards at the Keystone Open in May 2000. Both these events were held in Elysburg, Pa.
The grand slam puts Joe in some pretty rare company, Mrs. Pascoe said, as he is only the third junior shooter and 300th overall shooter in the American Trapshooting Association to acquire the honor.
The slam came hot on the heels of Joe being named trap shooter of the year for the state of Pennsylvania last month, she added. "He made us very proud," she said.
Joe, 18, also combined with his father to win the parent and child event in open shooting last weekend.
Honors: Other family honors obtained at the state shoot included open HOA on 1,000 targets with a score of 964 for Frank and open class AA (97), open junior singles (196/200), open junior doubles (95) and open HAA on 400 targets with a score of 391 for Joe.
But Joe and Frank aren't the only good Pascoe shooters.
Belinda, along with hubby Frank, won the husband and wife event in open shooting. What makes this even more of a feat is that Mrs. Pascoe has been shooting just three years.
"All my family was shooting trap, Frank, Joe, Kristen and Kenny, and I just had to get out there as well," she said. Kristen, 20, and Kenney, 22, also continue to shoot trap, she said.
"Trap shooting has kept my family close," Mrs. Pascoe said. "How many families can say that when they go places on the weekends, their 18, 20 and 22-year-old children go with them?"
The Pascoes are also planning on heading down to Vandalia, Ohio, for the ATA's Grand American 2001 shoot, Aug. 9-18. This event draws the top trap shooters from around the world.
When they aren't shooting, ALMOST all the Pascoes work for Pascoe Construction Co. in New Castle. Kristen, her mom said, works at a local bank.
The Pascoes were not the only winners last weekend from the area at the West Virginia event.
Other winners: Others from the greater Youngstown area turning in good performances included Vince Kamicker, (94, Open class D winner, Michael Kemp Doubles event); Frank Hornyak, (98, Open high gun, open doubles); Flip Jendre, (96, Open class C winner, open doubles and 95, Open 24-25 yards, open handicap championship); Talmadge Rose, (92, Open veteran, open doubles); and John Perciavalle, (96, Open 22-23 yards, open handicap championship.
