Facing assault charges
LEETONIA -- A 58-year-old village man is to appear late today in Northwest Area County Court in Salem after being charged with two counts of felonious assault.
Police arrested Matt Marcum of Beeson Mill Road on Tuesday, saying he fired a shotgun in the direction of a pickup truck being driven near his home by two Washingtonville-area boys, ages 16 and 17, about 2:43 a.m. Tuesday.
No injuries resulted from the gunfire, but the truck was struck by shotgun pellets, Police Chief John Soldano said Wednesday. Marcum was being held in the county jail pending his court appearance.
Fire victim identified
EAST LIVERPOOL -- Authorities have identified the man killed in Tuesday's rooming house fire as Daniel Sanders, 34, who lived in the three-story house at 228 W. Seventh St.
Sanders died of asphyxia as a result of smoke from the blaze. The cause has yet to be determined. Firefighters attempted to rescue Sanders from a third-floor window, but he refused to climb onto a ladder, saying he was afraid of heights. He then collapsed. Flames and smoke drove firefighters away. Four other men survived the early-morning blaze.
Police probe shooting
FARRELL, Pa. -- Southwest Mercer County Regional police continue their investigation into a shooting earlier this week they say was sparked by road rage.
Police said a car, occupied by three people, cut off another car Tuesday afternoon at an East Connelly Boulevard intersection in Sharon.
Police said the car that was cut off, which had two people in it, followed the first vehicle into Farrell. At one point, as the victims of the first car were driving along Fruit Avenue, they heard shots, police said.
Police said the car was hit by gunfire below a rear window and in the trunk. No injuries were reported.
Police said they found a 9 mm pistol casing at Negley Street and Fruit Avenue. The victims told police they did not know the occupants of the car that followed them.
Board to buy land
CANFIELD -- The board of education voted to pay $430,000 to purchase 27 acres on the outskirts of the city of Canfield.
The land is near the corner of Shields Road and state Route 46. Canfield Superintendent Douglas Hiscox said the board has no immediate plans for the land. He said, however, the district may need the land for expansion in the future.
The board also has voted to hire Ron Infante as the principal for grades five through eight at Canfield Village Middle School. He'll be paid $62,488 a year.
Infante previously served as the principal only for grades five and six at the school.
The principal for grades seven and eight resigned last year to take another position in the Western Reserve School District.
'Identi-kits' for children
LAKE MILTON -- The Mahoning County Sheriff's Department will be at Lake Milton Presbyterian Church at 942 Grandview Road at 2 p.m. July 29 to do children's "Identi-kits." Kits include photograph and fingerprints.
The event coincides with the church's & quot;Concerts-on-the-Lawn & quot; series. Entertainment will be provided by Laurie James and Stampede, a country band. The free concert begins at 2 p.m. Bring lawn chairs.
Man's trial is delayed
YOUNGSTOWN -- The trial for Irrin Donley, who confessed in April that he killed his girlfriend's 9-month-old baby, has been delayed and no new date has been set.
Donley, 23, of Magnolia Avenue, was watching the boy while the mother, Tisha Rozier, was at school. Authorities said the baby stopped breathing because Donley hit him. The baby was on life support for about four days before he died Oct. 19, 1998, in Forum Health Tod Children's Hospital.
Donley first pleaded guilty April 3 to involuntary manslaughter, but then asked to withdraw his plea and go to trial.
