Girard board receives one bid for removal of school carpet

GIRARD -- A Cleveland-area company is the only bidder seeking to remove carpeting from the troubled Girard Intermediate School.
Precision Environmental Co. of Independence bid $77,650 Tuesday for the removal work.
The board of education is expected to award the contract when it meets Tuesday.
Clayton Group Services, an Akron environmental consultant, recommended the carpeting be removed because it contains fungi in areas where it was damaged by water.
Replacing the carpet with a hard-surface material will be done under a separate contract.
Sick school: The school district is undertaking the work because pupils, teachers and staff were becoming ill. The building was closed early in the spring.
The school district has not advertised for bids for other work. It has not been determined if the building will be ready in the fall.
Building engineers and architects are determining if heating and cooling units in each room need to be replaced or upgraded, or if an auxiliary system should be added so more air can be moved in and out of the building.
Work cannot begin on replacing the duct work until it's determined what will be done with the room units, Superintendent Anthony D'Ambrosio said.
Although Clayton did not recommend replacement of the duct work, the district has decided to do it.
