Boy burns his face, armin explosive mishap
LIBERTY -- A 15-year-old Louise Lane boy was treated at Forum Health Tod Children's Hospital for injuries he received while playing with a homemade explosive device. According to a police report, Alex Hahn, 15, and his brother, 17, were in the woods across from their home Tuesday evening, using gunpowder and a cardboard tube to make the device. The boys lit the fuse, but nothing happened. Alex tried to adjust the device and it flashed, burning his face and lower arm, police said. His sister drove him to the hospital.
Panel approves zoningfor office construction
HOWLAND -- The township zoning commission has unanimously approved a zoning change that would permit the construction of offices on a residential section of North River Road. The final decision on rezoning North River Road, near Elm Road, as an office/institutional corridor review district is with the township trustees. They will likely conduct a hearing in August, said Gordon McLean, zoning inspector. The change has been approved by the Trumbull County Zoning Commission. The zoning change would affect properties on North River Road, from Elm Road to Heaton North Road, and along the north side of North River Road to AAA Storage. The new designation would allow the construction of offices, but not retail buildings, with all development plans subject to review by trustees.
Man pleads innocentin shooting case
WARREN -- A 58-year-old Parkman Road man has pleaded innocent to three charges of felonious assault and one count of domestic violence. Gerald Harnar entered the pleas Tuesday in the courtroom of Judge Andrew Logan. He is accused of assaulting his 85-year-old mother and shooting at police July 9. A Trumbull County deputy sheriff was wounded in the leg.
Grand jury recommendsadditional jail staffing
WARREN -- A Trumbull County grand jury says in a three-page report that additional staffing is needed at the county jail. Grand juries routinely tour the facility during their term and report their findings. Current jury members said that when they visited the jail, there were 12 officers for 270 inmates. The report also notes that one room in the jail, which houses computers, needs repairs. The report states that ceiling tile appears ready to disintegrate from water damage. Sheriff Thomas Altiere could not be reached.
DUI checkpoint
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Sheriff's Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday on Market Street, near Judson Avenue.
Twenty deputies will participate in the effort, which includes speed enforcement using new laser-guided radar guns.
Second arrest made
MILTON TOWNSHIP -- Police have made another arrest in a series of February break-ins. Matthew Simon, 21, of North River Road, Warren, was charged Tuesday with three counts of breaking and entering and three counts of theft. Police arrested Juan Rosario, 18, of North Jackson on July 10.
They say Simon and Rosario broke into a barbershop, a home and a car dealership. Simon was arrested in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court, just before he was scheduled to appear at a hearing on another case.
Guilty in drug case
CAMPBELL -- One of two adults caught with nearly 30 pounds of suspected high-grade marijuana June 27 pleaded no contest to drug-related charges Tuesday before Judge John P. Almasy in Campbell Municipal Court.
The judge found Bertha A. Gomez-Lopez, 38, of Arizona guilty. She was given consecutive sentences of 180 days in jail and fines of $3,500 for two counts of committing drug abuse. She was given credit for 20 days in jail with the rest of the sentence suspended.
A third count of contributing to the delinquency of a child was thrown out.
A 49-year-old Arizona man that she was caught with at a Coitsville motel had his trial moved to 9 a.m. Tuesday. Police said the drugs had a street value of up to $42,000.
