Snappers, Boys of Summer in finale
STRUTHERS -- The Lake Erie Snappers were scheduled to play Boys of Summer South at Cene Park today at noon for the Mickey Mantle (16 and younger) state baseball tournament championship.
The Snappers eliminated Akron Outlaws 11-10 Monday for third place, while The Boys of Summer North edged Astro Falcons 3-2 for fourth place.
Astro Falcons fell behind 2-0, then scored a run in the sixth inning and another run in the seventh to tie it a 2-2.
Boys of Summer North got the winning run in the bottom of the seventh
Bill Christian hit a triple and single for the Falcons, while teammates Brad Beck doubled twice and Joe Lopez also hit a double.
Harvey Yergin went seven innings to pick up the win for Boys of Summer North. Brett Lilly hit a pair of singles.
In the 11-10 slugfest, Lake Erie Snappers scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Akron Outlaws.
Scott Billak led the Snappers 15-hit attack with a triple, double and two singles.
In the 8-7 victory, the Snappers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to prevail.
Sean Spellay led the Snappers with an inside-the-park home run and a triple. Jeff Saley hit three singles while Billak hit a triple and single. Matt Grewe hit a double and single for the losers.
